In Hebrews 4:16 I read, “Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” (NLT)
Jesus’ ministry was all about mercy. There isn’t a person he doesn’t show mercy to.
The definition of mercy is “undeserved forgiveness and unearned kindness.” When somebody forgives me and I don’t deserve it, that’s mercy. When somebody shows me a kindness I haven’t earned, that’s mercy. And the Bible says that God wants to show me mercy.
The truth is, I need mercy every single second of my life. The air you breathe and the water I drink are mercies from God. I wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for the mercy of God. God made me because he wanted to love me and show me his mercy.
There are many reasons I need God’s mercy in your life, starting with this one:
I need God’s mercy when I’ve messed up.
We all do. None of us is perfect! We don’t measure up to our own standards, much less to God’s standards. Ecclesiastes 7:20 says, “Not a single person on earth is always good and never sins” (NLT). In other words, nobody gets it right all the time.
The Bible also says, “We all stumble in many ways” (James 3:2 NIV).
I stumble with my words, attitude, actions, and emotions. I have shown the wrong emotional response in a relationship and ended up hurting someone. But when I keep stumbling over my sins and mistakes, God respond to me with mercy.
So “Let me come boldly to the throne of my gracious God. There I will receive his mercy, and I’ll find grace to help me when I need it most” (Hebrews 4:16 NLT).
God wants me to go to him with my habits, hurts, and hang-ups, and to go with confidence! He’s not going to scold or condemn me. He’s going to respond with mercy.

Prayer is my approach to God, and I am to come "boldly". Some Christians approach God meekly with heads hung low, afraid to ask him to meet their needs. Others pray flippantly, giving little thought to what they say. Come with reverence because he is my King. But also come with a bold assurance because he is my Friend and Counselor.
