In James 1:17 I read, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." (NIV)
Experts say that the attitude I have for the day is set in the first eight minutes of my day. Do I want to grumble, gripe, and grunt my way through the day, or do you want to be grateful?
The Bible says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17 NIV).
Gratitude gets me to focus on my loving Father who meets all my needs.
Start the day with gratitude and not confessions or requests. Think about God and his goodness. Let him know he’s a good Father, and thank him for being caring, close, and consistent with me. I could even list the ways he’s been good to me to this point. I could tell him what I’m thankful for: i.e. running water, bed and a blanket, a warm house when it’s cold and a cold house when it’s hot outside. I don’t have to worry about the right thing to say. I can just say what I feel and what’s on my mind.
One of the ways I can start my day with thankfulness is to make a playlist of songs. Choose songs of gratitude that remind me of who God is and what he has done for me. Turn it on as soon as I open my eyes so that my first thoughts are grateful. Worship is the best way to wake up!
I can also make a list of the things I’m thankful for and keep it near my bed or wherever I have a quiet time. A gratitude list can help keep me focused on God’s goodness, and then I can pour out my heart to him in thanks.
When I wake up every morning, make sure the first thing I’m doing is thanking God for his consistent love and recalling all the ways that he’s good to me.
If I can get up with gratitude. It will change everything about my day!
In summary, every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father, who does not change like shifting winds. The attitude I have for the day is set in the first eight minutes of my day. Gratitude gets me to focus on my loving Father who meets all my needs. So start the day with gratitude. God's Word often compares goodness with light and evil with shadow and darkness. Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God my Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
Father, thank you for Your Word and Jesus as my savior and example. You want me and I need you in my life. Please give me Your strength for today and remind me in little ways that I can always believe in, have faith in and can trust you in everything. This includes being the authority for my life, the source of my self-worth and my hope for the future. You have my best interests in mind. So I ask you to help me to embrace the way you’ve made me; my gifting and passions. Help me to serve and fulfill the mission you have in mind for me.
Today, I ask you for wisdom and guidance for my day, my work, my leadership, my interactions with others, doing well and making a difference in others lives (including my job.) I pray all these things through your Son Jesus’ name, Amen.
