In review of Matthew 4:4 Jesus says, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (NIV)
Jesus was able to resist the devil's temptations because he not only knew scripture, but he also obeyed it. Knowing and obeying scripture helps me to follow God's desires rather than the devil's.
During these days of uncertainty and unrest, it’s important to start and end my day by refueling my soul. My soul is the way I think, feel, and choose. Just like my physical body has to be fed every day to stay healthy, so does my soul. If I don’t feed my soul, I’m going to be drained emotionally and spiritually.
I refuel my soul, by getting into God's Word every day. Jesus said, "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4 NIV). The Bible is life! I don’t just read it when I have a problem and need some advice. I don’t open it up just when I need a pick-me-up. I feed on it every day so that I am constantly nourished and growing in truth and love.
I should not begin my day by scrolling through your phone or listening to the news. I shouldn’t let the last thing that fills my mind each day be something on the TV. None of those things are going to feed my soul.
If you only develop one new habit during this pandemic, let it be starting and ending your day in God’s Word. Wherever I leave my Bible leave it open if possible. If the Bible is closed, I will have a tendency to overlook it. But if you leave it open to where I read last time, I’ll have an easier time remembering to be consistent in Bible reading.
It doesn't matter how long I read. It matters most how I let God’s Word change me, how I see myself and others in light of God’s love, how I view my circumstances, and how my relationship with God deepens and grows.
"The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will" (Isaiah 50:4 NLT).
Nourish my soul and stay emotionally healthy by starting and ending each day with the Word of God.
In summary, I need more than food to live on. I need the word that comes from the mouth of God. Knowing and obeying scripture helps me to follow God's desires rather than the devil's. So I need to start and end my day by refueling my soul. This means getting into God's Word every day, and not just when I have a problem and need some advice. Feed on it every day so that I am constantly nourished and growing in truth and love. Start and end each day in God’s Word. It doesn't matter how long I read. It matters most how I let God’s Word change me, how I see myself and others in light of God’s love, how I view my circumstances, and how my relationship with God deepens and grows.
Father I thank you today for this reminder to get into your Word. It’s most important that I not just read, but allow it to change my life. I pray that with help from the Holy Spirit to remind me that I will incorporate this into my daily routine. I ask also for wisdom and guidance for my day, for my work, for my leadership and for my interactions with others. I want to do what is right and do my work knowing that you are my ultimate leader. Allow me to display courage and provide an example to others through how I handle my new work situation.
