Putting My Hope in God, Not In My Bank Account

In review of 1 Timothy 6:17, Paul tells Timothy and myself, Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.” (NLT).

Paul advised Timothy to teach that having riches carries great responsibility. If blessed with wealth, then thank the Lord. Don't be proud and don't put your trust in your money. Rather use money to do good. Be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share. No matter how much money I have, my life should demonstrate that God controls the wealth that he has placed under my care.

The only thing in all of creation that worries is a human being. Plants don’t worry. Animals don’t worry. Only human beings act as if we don’t have a heavenly Father. If I worry about my finances, I’m basically saying, “I don’t really think he will meet my needs.” But God will, if I meet the conditions.

Worry is really a form of atheism. Every time I worry, I’m basically saying, “I don’t believe there’s a God who is going to take care of me.” As a follower of Christ, If I worry, I’m acting like an orphan. I’m acting like I don’t have a heavenly Father who has already promised over and over again in Scripture that he, “will meet my needs if I obey him and do what he tells me to do.” Trust forces me to live by faith.

Worry is a warning light. Every time I worry, it’s a warning that I doubt God loves me and will take care of me. I’ll only get into trouble when I doubt God’s love.

Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” (NLT).

As long as I love anything more than God, that thing is going to be a source of anxiety. Only one thing was meant for first place in my life, and it’s not your family. Anything I put first in my life besides God will create anxiety, because it can always be lost.

My bank account is not my security, no matter how big it gets. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 6:17, “Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.” (NLT)

Put my hope in God, because he will assume responsibility for all my needs if I’ll trust him.

In summary, don't be proud or put trust into money, which is so unreliable. My trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need. Having riches carries great responsibility. If blessed with wealth, thank the Lord. Don't be proud and don't put my trust in my wealth. Rather use money to do good. Be rich in good works, generous and ready to share. My life should demonstrate that God controls the wealth that he has placed under my care. As long as I love anything more than God, that thing is going to be a source of anxiety. Only God was meant to be first place in my life. I need to put my hope and trust in God, because if I do, he will assume responsibility for all my needs.

All of my trust and hope should be in God and not in what I have. Worry on my part about anything indicates that I don’t believe he will help me. I need to use what he has given me to help and serve others. My attitude should be one of generosity and not be concerned about having enough. Father this morning I pray that with the help of the Holy Spirit that I can be reminded during my day of this, and when I have decisions or interactions with others. I also ask for your wisdom and guidance for my day, my work, my leadership and my interaction with others. I pray this in your Son Jesus name, Amen.
