Good Decisions Always Agree with God’s Word

In review of Psalm 119:105 it reminds me that “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (NIV).

Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path.

For me to walk safely in the woods at night requires a light so that I don't trip over tree roots or fall into holes. In my life, I walk through a dark forest of evil. God's Word can be my light to show me the way ahead so that I won't stumble as I walk. It reveals the entangling roots of false values and philosophies. As I study his Word I will be able to see my way clear enough to stay on the right path.

When I need to make a decision, the first and ideal test is this: “Is my decision in harmony with God’s Word?”

I have to decide what’s going to be my ultimate authority in life. It really boils down to this choice: God’s Word or the world. Am I going to base my decisions on what God says or what other people say?

If I base my life on popular opinion, I’m always going to be out of date, because it changes every day. What was “in” yesterday will not be “in” today, and what’s “in” today will not be “in” tomorrow. If I base your life on popular culture, political correctness, or opinion polls, I’ll struggle because I’m building on a shifting foundation!

On the other hand, if I base my life on God’s Word, the truth never changes. Truth is always true. So if God says something was wrong 10,000 years ago, it was also wrong 500 years ago, it’s wrong today, and it will be wrong 1,000 years from today. It doesn’t matter what opinion polls and political correctness and the media say. If God says it’s wrong, it’s wrong. It always has been, and it always will be. If God says it’s right, it will always be right. That is a solid foundation!

God has set up the universe with certain laws; physical, moral, and spiritual. God built the universe around these laws because they’re all for my benefit. When I cooperate with the principles in this universe, I will succeed. If I reject, disobey, ignore, and rebel against God’s principles, I’m the one who gets hurt.

I don’t ever break God’s laws. They break me! If I go up on top of a building and jump off, I don’t break the law of gravity. It breaks me. The same is true with moral laws and spiritual laws. I cannot just thumb my nose at God and get away with it. There’s inevitably a reckoning. Anytime I violate God’s principles, I’m asking for trouble.

With all this in mind, I can be confident in my decision. If God says it’s okay, then I do it. If God says no, then I don’t do it.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105 NIV).

Bottom Line:
Your Word guides

What this means to me:
Your Word guides me and provides me with the best path.

In summary, Your Word is a lamp to guide me, a light for my path. It helps me walk safely so that I don't stumble. It reveals traps and entanglements. When I have a decision to make, I should ask if it's in harmony with His Word? I need to decide whether God's Word or the world will be my authority. Popular belief will always be out of date because it's changing. God's Word, the truth, never changes. What God says is for my benefit, when I cooperate with it, I will succeed. With this in mind, I can be confident in my decision. If God says it's OK, then do it. If God says no, then don't.

God thank you for providing me your Word that I can learn and take into my heart. I pray today that I remember this as I face decisions for today and in the near future. I pray also for your wisdom and guidance in my work tasks, leadership and interaction with others. This I pray in your Son Jesus name.
